Black Child Development Institute – Milwaukee (BCDI-Milwaukee) is incredibly excited to announce Kisha Shanks as Policy Director. Please join us in congratulating Kisha on her new role. BCDI-Milwaukee welcomes you!
In her new role, Ms. Shanks will develop and lead BCDI-Milwaukee’s equity-advancing advocacy initiatives to improve public policy impacting the education, health, and economic wellbeing of Black children in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin.
For the last 14 years, Kisha has dedicated her professional career to improving maternal and child health outcomes. She has worked tirelessly in community with families through a home-visiting program in which she’s advocated for their needs in both health care and social services. As a perinatal and Infant Mental Health Coach, she’s helped many families to navigate trauma, healing and to identify collective resilience. She’s done countless presentations on the need for equity in prenatal and early childhood initiatives at national conferences, community organizations and schools statewide. As a consultant (she’s the CEO and Founder of Yemoja Wellness Group, LLC), she has provided many state and local organizations serving Black birthing people, children, and families with thought-provoking insight to the root causes of inequities and best-practices to promote change moving forward.
Kisha Shanks holds a B.A. in Community Education from UW-Milwaukee. She also holds a Graduate Certificate in Infant, Early Childhood and Family Mental Health from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kisha also serves on the Board of Directors for Benedict Center, which is an organization dedicated to helping women affected by the criminal justice system.
In addition to her work with beloved community, Kisha is a published author, writer and speaker. But nothing tops her greatest joy of just being “mom” to her 15yr old daughter, whom she affectionally calls “Bellyfruit.”
Not only is Ms. Shanks a thought-leader in Maternal and Child health, she is also a knowledgeable, fierce, and unapologetic advocate for Black children, families, and community. Because of that, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her join the BCDI-Milwaukee family! Please join us in welcoming and congratulating Kisha on her new role!
